Picked up some old comics for cheap at the Amcorp Mall flea market yesterday.
They’re all in either ok-ish or poor condition but I picked them up either cos they had cool stories, cool covers I wouldn’t mind hanging on a wall or simply a novelty item. Didn’t really care much for the quality since they were between RM3 to RM5 each.
Amongst them were:
Wolverine #27 - part one of the Lazarus Project story arc with the very cool cover of Wolverine jumping forwards, claws out.
Batman, Legends of the Dark Knight #6, 7 & 9 - Parts 1, 2 & 4 of the very freaky ‘Gothic’ story arc by Grant Morriston.
Green Lantern #47 - Green Lantern teams up with Green Arrow once again.
Incredible Hulk #462 - Cool cover of the Hulk holding up a tank in front of General Ross.
Dino Riders #1 - Purely a novelty item (Dinosaurs! With guns!)… Unless some huge Dino Riders fan believes it’s worth a lot more than RM3.90.
Reading some of them made me realize there aren’t many new comics I enjoy reading anymore. I bought the first 6 issues of the new JLA and though it’s insanely beautifully drawn the story really didn’t grip me at all.
Am very tempted to make trips to the Amcorp flea market a regular weekend thing again. Haven’t done that since the days when I’d go searching for classic rock albums on vinyl with my bassist Jay from Rollin’ Sixers. Hmm…

Look out, Batman! The Joker’s got fish!
Seriously, what is up with those fish? What did the Joker do to them? Why are they smiling like that?
Did… did the Joker have sex with a fish? Could this be his mutant offspring? And why wasn’t Aquaman in the ocean stopping this disturbing act against nature?
Perhaps all these questions would have been answered if I’d bought the damn book. Oh, well…

It appears I’m in this book called ‘South East Asian Independent Cinema’, edited by Dr. Tilman Baumgartel.
The above caption on the pic is actually a lie. It appears this arrived quite a while ago and I only just noticed it in the mailbox. Snails had attempted to eat through the packaging but couldn’t get past the bubble wrap and ants were now trying their luck. Thankfully, the book remained unscathed.
Dr. Tilman’s one of those guys who’s been insanely supportive of my debut movie which often times boggles my mind. The dude opened his keynote speech about piracy in South East Asia with a trailer for ‘Ciplak’ and has referenced it quite a few times with regards to indie flicks in the region, so much so that it’s surreal. ‘Ciplak’ was a fun little movie that I made with a bunch of friends for shits and giggles but the way the dude talks about it almost makes it sound way more Important and Intellectual than it should be.
I’ve never met the dude, but I got an e-mail a few days ago from him saying that he’ll be stopping over KL for a night tomorrow and asked if I’d like to join him and a few others for dinner. Looks like I’ll finally get to meet him after all!
